Piecing It Together

November 19, 2011

Marking the quilt for machine-quilting, earlier this year.

Quilting brings people together in many ways and for many reasons. It gave me a reason to discover a whole new world of friends, plus build some wonderful unexpected relationships with family.

Quilting is also about giving back. As part of the non-profit group “The Raintree Quilters Guild” I have had many opportunities to assist in community projects that benefit people in need, and to gain from the combined knowledge bases of hundreds of quilters. This year I wanted to give back something more than normal, so I shouldered the task of designing and constructing the piece that the group uses as a fundraiser.

This was a big project, and while my design and constructed elements took center stage, there were quite a few ladies who gave selflessly of their time and skill to assist in making this quilt. Members took a hand-dyeing workshop with local dye artist Katherine Sands, and instead of going home with armloads of fabric for their own stashes, they used that time to create custom dyed yardage for the Guild’s quilt. Others cut and pieced borders, or hand-appliqued, or machine-quilted. Many hands made the work light indeed.

The quilt will be raffled off in a few short weeks. The funds raised go to promote education of area quilters, plus provide supplies for the Guild’s many Service Projects. Lynda Heines of the Evansville Courier and Press had a lengthy interview with me, to help showcase the project and the group.  Here are the links to Lynda’s article at the Courier, and to her own blog.

Thanks to all the quilters in my life. I love you all.
